Near Death Experiences
About one third of people who have come close to death report some sort of 'experience' or 'happening' and research continues into these experiences. Experiences range from a feeling that one's self has left the body and may be hovering overheard, able to see and hear what is going on, to moving through a dark tunnel, often towards a bright light at the end and sometimes meeting deceased family members or seeing a rapid re-run of your life.
Now these experiences will be the subject of a three year serious medical study at hospitals in the UK and US. Doctors plan to examine the recollections of 1,500 patients who survive heart attacks. The study aims to test the familiar claims made by those who ‘come back from the dead’ after their heart stops and brain activity ceases. Patients involved in the study will be asked to recall memories from when they were in cardiac arrest or ‘clinically dead’ to see whether their experiences were accurate or merely illusions.
In addition, researchers have put images on shelves in participating hospitals that can only be seen from above the ground. Dr Sam Parnia, an intensive care doctor and visiting technician at the University of Southampton is heading the research. He says, “Contrary to popular perception, death is not a specific moment. If you can demonstrate that consciousness continues after the brain switches off, it allows for the possibility that consciousness is a separate entity. “It is unlikely that we will find many cases where this happens but we have to be open-minded. If no one sees the pictures, it shows these experiences are illusions or false memories.”
Hospitals involved in the study include Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge, University Hospital in Birmingham and the Morriston in Swansea.
Many people undergoing such an experience believe that it proves there is a life after death, or some form of existence that may survive death. Others, particularly those in the scientific community believe that these experiences can be explained by the chemical changes taking place in the brain at times of trauma or closeness to death. Certainly these experiences change people's lives and their outlook on life forever.
A number of organisations are keen to record and research near death experiences that people may have undergone.
